Little did I know that gazing on this moose poop this
morning…that the thought would carry over to most of the roads we drove on today
(except poop would be the mild term)!
We knew that “some” of the roads were going to be rough and with
construction for 400+ miles we would be traveling today; but we underestimated
the “some” part. It should have been “most.”
Saw this sign more times than I can say.
It warned of broken pavement.
Bumps ahead….Canadian style.
Roads didn’t get better as we crossed the border into Canada.
They were working on the roads, which will be nice for those traveling in the
future; but for those of us that traveling in the present… are roughing it
today.
The crushed rock wasn’t too bumpy; but the dust was so thick
that it was hard to see the car in front of you. This went on for miles and miles and miles! Now we have a dirty motorhome and a ding in
our windshield.
Seeing a sign for “End of Construction” isn’t
always a good thing because here it means…we’re just not working on that part
of the highway yet. Can you see how the
road ripples? Now imagine a 30 foot
motorhome bouncing down the road after going over those ripples. It’s like a
roller coaster ride and you better have your seat belts on! I hope bouncing burns calories!
The scenic panorama around us helped soften the blows that our
bodies and motorhome was taking.
We
at lunch by Kluane Lake in the Yukon in Canada.
If we were fishermen, we would be eating white fish or trout for lunch
instead of spaghetti! This lake is fed
by a nearby glacier and runs for 43 miles along the Alaskan
Highway. It makes for a beautiful
drive.
I think that seagull is giving us a dirty look! It was like he was pointing out that this area belongs to him and to remind us that our parking was only a temporary
thing. I really think he was waiting for
some bread crumbs to drop from our lunch.
Camping in Haines Junction tonight. This sculpture, called the “Muffin” or
“Animal Cupcake” is on the corner of the Alaska Highway and the Haines Highway. It is the most photographed corner in Haines
Junction.
Nice view out our window at the campground. Almost looks fake. Campsite was less desirable…not level so the
blood rushed to our heads while sleeping, had cable; but only 1 channel worked,
and had Wi-Fi; but didn’t let us do much more than check our email and that was
if we were in the bedroom, so that meant no uploading blog. The corker was that they had a sign saying
“take your garbage with you.” For $36
for that site…they got our garbage!
Hate
to leave on a crabby note…so I have to mention something that has made us very
happy today. For 5 years we have been trying to solve the source of a rattling
noise somewhere in the motorhome. Bill
has taken the door panel off numerous times to see if something was loose. He put foam in different places in the
motorhome, hoping to stop the annoying sound.
It wasn’t until we went on all those rough roads did the sound
disappear! Each of us were afraid to
mention that the noise was gone because we figured at any minute it would return.
So even though the roads were like riding a bucking bronco… they
hopefully got rid of another problem for good that has been plaguing us for 5
years. It’s so nice and quiet without
that rattle. Now, what are we going to talk about?
